Farm Manager at Longerenong Ag College

Longerenong Agriculture College provides hands on agriculture training within the setting of a 1080+ha commercial mixed farming operation growing; canola, wheat, barley, lentils, chickpeas, beans and hay, with a herd of 1000 sheep and 50 cattle.
The Farm Manager will oversee the day-to-day operations of the College Farm.

Key Responsibilities:

Farm Operations:

  • Undertake the daily tasks required to complete the full production cycle.
  • Operate all machinery to maximize the technology and productivity available.
  • Have a strong working knowledge of crop production and animal husbandry.
  • Plan and complete farming activities to ensure farm improvements over the long term.
  • Work collaboratively with the Livestock Coordinator to complete day to day operations of the College Farm.
  • Perform modern and progressive mixed, dryland farming practices.
  • Attend to farm related issues and emergencies at night and on weekends as required.

Teaching and Research:

  • Assist with facilitating research activities on the college farm.
  • Ensure the success of third-party relationships including Agriculture Victoria, BASF and Bayer
  • Liaise with teaching staff to ensure the farm is utilised to its full capacity
  • Assist teaching staff with farm practice demonstrations and student training
  • Assist with the supervision of students undertaking practical tasks on the farm.

Farm & Financial Management:

  • Organise and chair the six weekly farm meetings.
  • Work with the General Manager to create the yearly farm budget.
  • Report monthly on the farm financials to the General Manager.
  • Actively monitor the commodities market and make recommendations
  • Work closely with the private agronomist

OHS and Industry Reputation:

  • Make suggestions on and adhere to all OH&S safety requirements.
  • Participate in OHS improvements as a member of the OHS Committee.
  • Ensure Quality Management System practices and guidelines are followed.
  • Actively promote and uphold the image of the College.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years working in a similar role (desirable).
  • Demonstrated experience with the operation of heavy farm machinery and farm equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge in the practical operation of a mixed broad acre farm.
  • Qualifications in agriculture
  • Current Driver's Licence
  • Employee Working with Children Check
