Congratulations to Alex Tzilantonis (pictured left with Skillinvest staff member Selina Heard-Price) for winning the Skillinvest Girls’ (Under 17) 100-metre final at the annual Stawell Gift held recently over the Easter long weekend. If history is anything to go by, Alex could now be on track to become the fourth teenage girl in a row to become the Women’s Stawell Gift winner in 2018…
Winners of the 2015 and 2016 Skillinvest Under 17’s race, both went on to claim the Women’s Stawell Gift in subsequent years. Alex completed her race in 11.758 seconds, coming in 0.246 seconds faster than last year’s Under 17 winner, Olivia Ryan.
As this year’s Women’s Gift winner, 16-year-old Olivia Ryan is the third teenage girl to win Australia’s biggest foot race, since the women’s prize money was increased to match the men’s two years ago. Taking home more than $40,000, Olivia now dreams of competing in the Olympics!
A proud supporter of the iconic Stawell Gift for over 10 years, Skillinvest is committed to providing training and employment opportunities for women in traditional and non-traditional industries. Through our sponsorship of the Girls Under 17 race, we continue to support and encourage young women to strive for and achieve their dreams - both in and outside the workplace.
One of the world’s most prestigious and well-known foot races, the Stawell Gift is a four-day event that has been running for over 135 years, and is rich in history and sporting achievements.
Well done to all the participants of this year’s Skillinvest Girls Under 17 and Stawell Gift events, particularly to Alex - we can’t wait to see what you do next.
